So the chances are that you are used to wearing everyday normal underwired bras, but then you find out you are pregnant. You start reading that you should stop wearing your underwired bras and it is a definite ‘no’ to wearing underwired nursing bras whilst breastfeeding.
Is that true?
Well, yes and no!
It is true that as your breasts change size and shape during your pregnancy, you should be very aware of how your bra fits. An underwired bra may not fit as well as a soft cup bra. We see many ladies who get into their second trimester and realise that their underwired bras are now causing them pain and are uncomfortable to wear all day. The standard structure of an underwired bra, including the wire itself, does not allow for these changes in your breasts. So you may decide to change to a soft cup maternity bra or an underwired nursing bra.
Underwired nursing bras usually have a ‘flexi-wire’ which means that the wire is not as firm as a normal wire and is flexible so will smooth around your changing breasts more easily.
Have you noticed that at certain times of the month your breasts are fuller and perhaps you need a softer, less structured bra because you are not comfortable in your underwired bra? It is no different in pregnancy when your breasts will be changing as your body prepares for you to have the baby.
You may not be planning on breastfeeding, but still want to have a comfortable but supportive bra during your pregnancy. You can wear nursing bras during pregnancy, so perhaps an underwired nursing bra is an option for you?
You might have a large cup size before you even got pregnant, never mind getting bigger again during your pregnancy and you feel that you need the underwire to continue to give you support. Again, an underwired nursing bra is a good choice for you.
If you are fitted in an underwired nursing bra at the end of your first trimester, it is likely that this bra will last you for the rest of your pregnancy. You will need a new size for breastfeeding though.
As for wearing an underwired nursing bra whilst breastfeeding, we don’t advise wearing underwired nursing bras until baby is at least 12 weeks old. This is because your breast shape and size will change significantly during the first 12 weeks of breastfeeding.
After 12 weeks, your breasts will start to settle into a more stable size and if you are breastfeeding beyond 6 months, then you may be ready to have a bit more support with an underwired nursing bra.
We stock a range of underwired nursing bras, which are suitable to wear throughout pregnancy as well as for breastfeeding, from the HOTmilk Forever Yours T-Shirt Flexi Wire Nursing Bra through to the prettier Cake Lingerie Banana Parfait or HOTmilk Lure Nursing Bra, so you should find something suitable for everyday wear or for a special occasion when you want to feel more supported.
Of course, we are always here to offer support and advice and with unlimited exchanges, we will work with you to make sure you have the right style bra, whatever stage of pregnancy or breastfeeding you are at.
