So the chances are that you are used to wearing everyday normal underwired bras, but then you find out you are pregnant. You start reading that you should stop wearing your underwired bras and it is a definite ‘no’ to wearing underwired nursing bras whilst breastfeeding.
Is that true?
Well, yes and no!
It is true that as your breasts change size and shape during your pregnancy, you should be very aware of how your bra fits. An underwired bra may not fit as well as a soft cup bra. We see many ladies who get into their second trimester and realise that their underwired bras are now causing them pain and are uncomfortable to wear all day. The standard structure of an underwired bra, including the wire itself, does not allow for these changes in your breasts. So you may decide to change to a soft cup maternity bra or an underwired nursing bra.
Underwired nursing bras usually have a ‘flexi-wire’ which means that the wire is not as firm as a normal wire and is flexible so will smooth around your changing breasts more easily.
Have you noticed that at certain times of the month your breasts are fuller and perhaps you need a softer, less structured bra because you are not comfortable in your underwired bra? It is no different in pregnancy when your breasts will be changing as your body prepares for you to have the baby.
You may not be planning on breastfeeding, but still want to have a comfortable but supportive bra during your pregnancy. You can wear nursing bras during pregnancy, so perhaps an underwired nursing bra is an option for you?
You might have a large cup size before you even got pregnant, never mind getting bigger again during your pregnancy and you feel that you need the underwire to continue to give you support. Again, an underwired nursing bra is a good choice for you.
If you are fitted in an underwired nursing bra at the end of your first trimester, it is likely that this bra will last you for the rest of your pregnancy. You will need a new size for breastfeeding though.
As for wearing an underwired nursing bra whilst breastfeeding, we don’t advise wearing underwired nursing bras until baby is at least 12 weeks old. This is because your breast shape and size will change significantly during the first 12 weeks of breastfeeding.
After 12 weeks, your breasts will start to settle into a more stable size and if you are breastfeeding beyond 6 months, then you may be ready to have a bit more support with an underwired nursing bra.
We stock a range of underwired nursing bras, which are suitable to wear throughout pregnancy as well as for breastfeeding, from the HOTmilk Forever Yours T-Shirt Flexi Wire Nursing Bra through to the prettier Cake Lingerie Banana Parfait or HOTmilk Lure Nursing Bra, so you should find something suitable for everyday wear or for a special occasion when you want to feel more supported.
Of course, we are always here to offer support and advice and with unlimited exchanges, we will work with you to make sure you have the right style bra, whatever stage of pregnancy or breastfeeding you are at.

Many of the pregnant ladies and new mums we meet are used to wearing moulded underwired bras and worry about moving to soft cups bras that may not give them the shape they are used to. They are then very surprised when we show them the range of moulded nursing bras we have available.
We are highlighting three of our favourites here, although the full range can be seen on our website.
First up is the very popular Cake Lingerie Mousse Nursing Bra. This is a great bra for those of you with smaller backs and cups. Starting at a 30A up to a 38DD, we have found this gives a great shape and with the plunge front, it is perfect for under lower cut tops. Available in the gorgeous rose pink, or fig if you prefer a darker colour and now, it also comes in maple (skintone). Matching briefs make this set perfect to make you still feel good about yourself during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.
Next we have the absolutely gorgeous Royce Poppy Nursing Bra. New this summer from Royce, it has been an instant hit for our customers.
Soft and simple with the lovely vintage floral design, it really feels like you are not wearing a bra when you put it on, but it still offers fantastic support.
Sizes available from 32D – 40FF.
Finally, we know that some of you still want an underwired option, so we have the Cake Lingerie Croissant Nursing Bra.
Now, we don’t recommend that you wear an underwired nursing bra until baby is at least 12 weeks old, but many of our ladies who are feeding beyond 6 months really like this style as it gives them the support of an underwired bra and the fabric gives a smooth line under your tops. As with the Cake Mousse Nursing Bra, this also has a lower front making it look like an ‘ordinary’ underwired bra, and is suitable for lower cup tops, even in the larger sizes.
Available in 3 colours, dark, light and the new raisin (purple), this is one of our bestselling underwired nursing bras in 32C – 40H.
So, these are three of our favourite moulded nursing bras, and we have just added to the website the new Royce Pollyanna Nursing Bra, another skintone moulded nursing bra.
We’d love to hear from you if you have a favourite moulded nursing bra.
Each month we are going to highlight particular products and offer a discount on those items, so look out for your favourite styles and grab yourselves a bargain!
This month, we have a very special offer on the Loveyush Nursing Scarves. With two new designs now in stock, we have reduced all designs to 10% off, but this is only valid until 12th July, so you need to be quick!!
These scarves allow you to breastfeed discreetly if you are out and about, but can then turn into stylish accessories when you are not breastfeeding.
We also love the Cake Lingerie Banana Parfait Nursing Bra.
This is a balconette style bra with A-frame support and is so comfortable, you won’t feel like you are wearing a bra! It is a gorgeous cream colour which is perfect for summer and has 100% cotton lined cups so if you find your nipples are sensitive from breastfeeding, this bra will not cause you any more discomfort.
It has a flexi-wire so for those of you who feel you need a bit more support than a soft cup bra gives, this is ideal – just make sure that the wires are not digging into any of your breast tissue.
Available from 32C to 40H, we have 10% off the bra this month, or we have also discounted the Banana Parfait Bra & Knickers if you like to have matching undies as well!
This bra is suitable for both pregnancy and breastfeeding.
We also have a selection of end of line bras and breastfeeding clothing available in our sale so you might find something else to treat yourself to this month!
Bras! Where do you start? Some women when they get pregnant ignore the changes in their breasts and just carry on as usual and then finally when it all gets too uncomfortable buy new bras. But at that stage they then realise that they could have been comfy all along!
So, we suggest that you get new bras when you start to feel that the ones you’ve got don’t fit any more. Makes sense really doesn’t it? That’s what we do with our other clothing (unless we’re in denial about dress sizes!), so why not our bras?
Our breasts start to get ready for breastfeeding baby (even if you don’t plan to breastfeed, your breasts don’t know that!), when you first conceive. So we usually expect women to need a new bra during the first trimester. We suggest a simple soft bra, usually a bustier type bra, is a good buy at this stage. Women often get tender and sore breasts in the first 12-16 weeks, so a soft bra that you can sleep in is a good investment.
If you get more structured bras (that do up at the back, with a bit more support in them), I’d suggest you get them towards the end of the first trimester. Maybe after your first scan so you don’t mind too much about spending money now you know it’s really true that you’re pregnant! A rule of thumb for buying a maternity bra at this stage, is to increase the band size, and keep the same cup size, or increase it. You’ll know what’s best for you, and our specialist bra fitters can always advise you on what’s likely to last to the end of pregnancy.
There are a few unlucky ladies whose breasts continue to grow during pregnancy, but this is rare. So, the bra that you get at the end of your first trimester should last you to the end of your pregnancy, AS LONG AS YOU’VE FITTED IT ON IT’S TIGHTEST SETTING WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT, to allow for the band to grow with your rib cage during pregnancy.
The best time to get fitted for nursing bras, is at about 35-36 weeks, when your ribs are at their biggest. This way we know that your ribs will get smaller, but your breasts will get bigger – yes, again! You fit this bra on it’s loosest setting as you would a normal bra. So, the starting point at this stage is your pre-pregnancy band size, and 2-3 cup sizes bigger than you were before you got pregnant.
Always make sure the bra covers your whole breast as anything pressing on the breast can cause blocked ducts, and potentially lead to mastitis, which you really do not want. Sometimes you need to change the style of the bra, rather than just change the size. Ask our specialist fitters for advice on different styles you can try.
Bra fitting is not easy at the best of times, with all styles and manufacturers fitting differently. It’s even more complicated with an ever changing body and breast shape. But, it’s so important to be comfortable. Yes, comfort above style during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some would disagree, but if you’re not comfy, it can affect your milk let down when feeding, and can also make you feel grumpy about being uncomfortable.
There is so much selection out there of maternity and nursing bras (and you can wear nursing bras during pregnancy if they’re the right style for you.) Some of you will have more limited choice with your size. But there may still be a choice if you use a specialist bra shop, like bras4mums.
The bras4mums range caters for the many changes your body will undergo during pregnancy and breast feeding, with your complete comfort in mind. With bras4mums, you can be a loving mother and an attractive woman, presenting a stunning cleavage and curvaceous silhouette to be proud of! In a perfectly fitting, functional yet feminine bra you will feel beautiful inside and out! Happy, confident Mums produce happy babies – you and your baby deserve the best!
